Kitchen sales will rise by £50million in 2019, despite challenges for the £3billion industry, according to the latest report by MTW Research on the UK kitchen market.
Based on kitchen suppliers’ data, the report found that higher value, rigid kitchen cabinets, cooking appliances, premium taps and dishwashers are outperforming the kitchen market.
However, it also found the mid-market continues to experience a squeeze on both prices and profits with online retailers gaining share through aggressive pricing strategies.

The 170-page report noted designs are more complex and nuanced, as consumers seek personalisation of their kitchen, which supports sales of higher value kitchens.
MTW pointed to ‘urban’, ‘industrial’, ‘chic rustic’ and ‘vintage’ kitchen designs driving the trends in 2019.
In addition, it stated the “connected kitchen” was driving value in the luxury kitchen and it was filtering into the high-end market.
The report cited smart extractors, voice activated hobs and built-in cabinet smart speakers as examples of how technology was being integrated into kitchens.
However for the lower-end, MTW says cost-conscious consumers may opt for refreshing doors, handles and taps rather than undertake full kitchen refits.
But the market research company also forecasted a return to growth for the lower end in 2020.
Director of MTW Mark Waddy commented: “Kitchen retailers have mostly won the battle against the Sheds who are repositioning to more traditional DIY market positions.
“Growth in the lower value sector is likely to be elusive in 2019, forcing online and DIY channels to engage in a ‘battle royale’ on pricing, with profound implications for kitchen suppliers with poorly defined market positions.”
