Support the independents all year, not just at Christmas demands the KBSA
Following reports that this year’s Small Business Saturday achieved around £36million more than 2013, the Kitchen Bathroom Bedroom Specialists Association (KBSA) is calling for additional days to help independent retailers.
It suggests the current Small Business Saturday, which is held in December, favours only those retailers with seasonal sales around Christmas and wants to keep the SME sector alive for the year.
The KBSA points out the needs of small business in the UK are all different and seasonality varies for each sector, therefore this should be the driver for more independent retail campaigns.

It also remarks that retailers should look to their customer’s needs and may have to adapt to their shopping habits, looking at opening hours such as whether they should stay open later or on a Sunday.
Chief executive of the KBSA, Graham Ball said: “We need government to get real about the issues facing SMEs and stop meddling around the edges. They should implement immediately the Small Business Department, suggested by many, and staff it with people who understand and are prepared to work with small businesses in the UK. As a key driver of the UK economy, to me, it’s a no-brainer.”
