Homeowners are looking to create bigger bathrooms, with one in five homeowners choosing to increase the space during renovations (20%), says design platform Houzz.

As reported in the UK Houzz Bathroom Trends Study, nearly half of bathrooms measure 50sqft or more, following refurbishments (47%).

It has also seen a growth in spend, with the average spend up 33% to £7,000 from £5,250 in 2023.

Vanities continue to take the spotlight, with nearly two-thirds of homeowners upgrading vanity cabinets (63%), and one in five choosing wood.

Reflecting the trend for larger bathrooms, when removing a bath, more than 9 in 10 homeowners enlarge shower (92%) spaces, with a third choosing to make them more than 50% larger.

It has seen a growth in interest of showering spaces, as more than one in five homeowners relocated their showers following a bath removal (22%).

For homeowners who prefer a bath, an alcove installation with walls surrounding three sides, is the most popular option at 40% and the most popular feature is space for two (36%).

While colour has made a return to the bathroom space, white remains the most popular choice for vanities and wall colour, both inside and outside a shower space.

Houzz staff economist, Marine Sarsyan commented: “Homeowners are making bold design choices, particularly with vanity units, and focusing on contemporary styles to transform their bathrooms into functional yet stylish spaces.

“These projects often require the expertise of professionals to ensure both practicality and aesthetic appeal.”
