Parent company of Ikea, The Ingka Group, acquired the shopping centre in 2023, where it will open a permanent store in the summer, marking its 23rd opening.

CEO and chief sustainability officer at Ikea UK Peter Jelkeby said: “We’re delighted to continue expanding and investing throughout the UK to make it easier and more sustainable for people to shop at Ikea.

“Sussex has long been an area of interest to us, and we really look forward to bringing Ikea closer to where our customers live, work and socialise and becoming a part of this vibrant community.

The Brighton Ikea City store will span two floors and offer an array of the brand’s products, alongide a Swedish Deli.

Approximately 6,000 products will be on display, with 3,000 available for immediate purchase, and will include kitchen, bedroom and bathrooms with in-store planning service

Its full range will be available for delivery via zero-emission vehicles.

According to Ikea, the Churchill Square Shopping Centre has traditionally attracted more than 11 million visitors annually.

It follows on from the opening of a smaller format store in Hammersmith, London, in 2022, which is located on the high street.

Ingka Centres’ managing director Cindy Andersen said: “Brighton is known as a welcoming and progressive city, so it is a real privilege to take up responsibility for delivering a revitalised meeting place of which the many people can be truly proud.

“We are excited to strengthen our portfolio with a well-established shopping destination in the heart of the vibrant and growing city of Brighton and Hove.

“It fits perfectly into our global expansion strategy, allowing us to transform a traditional retail space to a meeting place that is much more than just a place to shop.

She continued: “We’ve proven in Hammersmith that traditional shopping centres have a strong future when they are adapted and constantly evolving to match the real needs of local communities.

“We’ll be working alongside our partners such as Ikea and the wider community to make everyday life better for the many people of Brighton, shaping and delivering an affordable, sustainable range of destination retail, restaurants, services and amenities.”

The Ikea Brighton City store will follow on from the opening of it store on Oxford Street in London on May 1, which will span three floors of a seven-storey building and cover 5,800sqm.

Ikea also has plans to expand its small store format across the UK, opening outlets in Harlow, Chester and Norwich, taking over locations previously occupied by Homebase outlets.

They belong to The New Classtone and Fusioncollections which interpret marble and natural stone, respectively, and boast Neolith’s antibacterial NeolEAT technology.

Inspired by Ancient Rome,  Calacatta Roma (pictured top) pays homage to Italian Carrara marble, with ochre and grey veins in a white background.

While the Cappadocia region, in central Turkey, with its rock formations formed by volcanoes and underground cities, has inspired Cappadocia Sunset (pictured below).
