2024 has undoubtedly been defined by the rise of the ‘spa-throom’, with its emphasis on warmth, tranquillity and distinctive character, putting consumer’s relaxation at the forefront of bathroom design.

And as we head into the new year, Frontline Bathrooms anticipates spa-inspired décor will remain prominent and continue to grow in popularity.

But why have we witnessed such a distinctive incline in consumers seeking an in-house sanctuary?

A variety of socio-economic factors have contributed to this trend, leading to consumers desiring spaces that promote mindfulness and relaxation.

The cost-of-living crisis has led to consumers being more considerate with their non-essential spending, instead, they look to carefully curate indulgent spaces within their own homes.

Rising costs across the market has resulted in consumers seeking to create relaxing spaces that serve as an escape from the stresses of life, without having to spend a significant amount of money.

And with bathrooms being synonymous with revitalisation and tranquillity, this room is typically where customers will seek to retire to when requiring self-care.

Biophilic design and the ‘spa-throom’

Biophilic design is a concept that aims to connect people with nature within built environments.

It involves incorporating natural elements into a space, such as natural materials, water and light, creating a sense of invigoration and enjoyment.

A strong focus on earthy textures and natural materials like marble, wood, slate, ceramic and clay are pivotal in achieving biophilic design.

These organic textures also immediately warm up a bathroom space, no longer feeling like a conventional functional room, instead eliciting a feeling of sanctuary in the home.

Colour choice is another essential consideration when looking to create a tranquil space inspired by nature.

Natural, muted and earthy tones provide colour to the bathroom without overpowering the space.

Shades such as taupe and beige emulate a rejuvenating setting and add a cosy and warm atmosphere in the bathroom, also complementing materials like wood, rattan and stone which will give a more organic and natural feel to the bathing space.

Lighting

Lighting plays a crucial role in creating a relaxing ambiance and can deliver immediate results at a more affordable price point.

Incorporating different types of lighting will create layers of light and remove the need for harsh direct lighting found in conventional bathrooms.

Diffused lighting options such as recessed, accent and task lighting will ensure plenty of light within the bathroom for activities from shaving to bathing, without disrupting a relaxing atmosphere.

LED lighting placed behind vanities and mirrors will also illuminate designated areas required for self-care and grooming and is a budget-friendly option for achieving a spa-inspired atmosphere.

Spa-inspired showers

We are seeing a growing interest in shower system innovations that deliver different showering experiences.

The market is seeing newer shower systems being introduced that offer a variety of water output, varying from fine droplet spray models for a misty environment, through to wider shower heads that offer a drenching experience.

Rainfall shower heads are dominating the market as one of the most prominent trends in bathroom design.

The greater surface area means water is released from the shower head in a much wider fashion, creating that feeling of a cascade of water softly coming down onto your head and shoulders, contrasting to traditional shower heads that provide a more directional flow of water in a narrow fashion, delivering a less satisfying experience for the user.

Looking ahead

Past spa-inspired bathroom trends have focused on statement bathtubs, from roll-top designs to free-standing additions, however, we are now seeing a shift in trends towards walk-in showers and wet-rooms.

There is a misconception that bathtubs are required in a bathroom to generate a feeling of luxurious relaxation, and whilst they are proponents of peacefulness, walk-in showers are having their moment in the spotlight.

We are seeing a growing desire among homeowners to integrate walk-in showers and wet rooms into their spaces, mainly due to their versatility, functionality and aesthetic appeal.

Customisation is at the heart of the walk-in shower’s allure, where consumers can be freed from the space-related constraints of standard bathtubs, instead provided with the creative freedom to tailor every aspect of their shower experience to their desires.

More so than other factors, showering is often considered more cost effective and less wasteful, and we are witnessing a shift in consumer mindsets to seek out opportunities to be both budget and environmentally conscious.

Sintered stone manufacturer Neolith has launched Calacatta Roma and Cappadocia Sunset, inspired by nature and classical architecture, and for use in kitchens or bathrooms walls, floors, in gardens or facades.

Neolith | Calacatta Roma and Cappadocia Sunset

They belong to The New Classtone and Fusioncollections which interpret marble and natural stone, respectively, and boast Neolith’s antibacterial NeolEAT technology.

Inspired by Ancient Rome,  Calacatta Roma (pictured top) pays homage to Italian Carrara marble, with ochre and grey veins in a white background.

While the Cappadocia region, in central Turkey, with its rock formations formed by volcanoes and underground cities, has inspired Cappadocia Sunset (pictured below).
